The Monterey Peninsula holds many treasures from a host of dining and retail destinations and must-not-miss historic spots to awesome waterfront real estate. Most of all, this area has become renowned as a hotspot for intensely awe-inspiring vistas of sand, rock, and sea. And the best way to see this peninsula in all its splendor is through a road trip via 17-Mile Drive.
Here are things to expect while making your way through the magnificent 17-Mile Drive:
Traipse through the Spanish Bay Boardwalk.
Enjoy the ocean breeze from Huckleberry Hill
Listen to barking sea lions at Spyglass Hill Golf Course
See more sea creatures in Seal Rock Creek
Catch the sunset at Cypress Point Lookout
Hit the fairways in any of Pebble Beach’s golf courses
Whether it’s a leisurely stroll or power walking that you prefer, the Spanish Bay Boardwalk will not disappoint. The best part of this trail is the unfettered views of the beach, sand dunes, and a diverse selection of sun worshippers. Bonus tip: For free access to the trail, start your trek at the southernmost part of Asilomar State Beach.
There’s nothing quite like a view of the ocean from an elevation of 800 feet. That’s the “high” you’ll get from stopping by Huckleberry Hill. The forest trail here gives you a one-on-one encounter with nature’s best. Take your dog out for a walk or watch out for exotic birds here.
Unmindful of the golfing humans several meters away, boisterous sea lions congregate on Bird Rock, a seaside par-3 hole here. Whether you choose to play or to watch these amusing sea mammals, you’ll be in for a great time. Tip: you might just see some migrating whales between November and March from this vantage point, too.
This is where inland water meets the ocean. Since Seal Rock is quite near Bird Rock, expect to see more antics from sea lions, harbor seals, and birds like pelicans and spouts. Have your snacks at their picnic area as you take in the sights and sounds of nature around you.
Witness the dying rays of the sun creating a myriad of colors in the dusk sky while ocean waves crash at the shoreline and rocks. This is also where you’ll find the Lone Cypress, probably one of the most iconic trees ever documented on Instagram.
Much of 17-Mile Drive’s length runs through the picturesque Pebble Beach. In this area alone, you will find as many as four golf courses:
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a golfing newbie or a veteran, what matters is that you will be amazed by the world-class greens and the spectacular ocean views.
